The session

What we’ll cover

Dying without a Will

Who actually inherits under the intestacy rules, and why it’s rarely who people assume. Unmarried partners inherit nothing at all.

Protecting the family home

Joint tenancy and tenancy in common, what care fees can and cannot reach, and where a trust genuinely helps, and where it doesn’t.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

Both types, what happens to a family without one, and why a bank won’t simply take a relative’s word for it.

Inheritance Tax in plain English

The nil rate band, the residence nil rate band, and the seven-year rule on gifts. Just the parts that affect ordinary estates.

Questions from the floor

Usually the best part. We stay as long as your group wants to keep asking, and we don’t mind the awkward ones.

Common questions

What committees always ask

Is it really free?

Yes. No fee, no travel expenses, and no request for a donation to anything.

Will you sell to our members?

No. There is no pitch and no sign-up sheet. We offer a free consultation to anyone who wants one, and that’s the extent of it.

What do we need to provide?

A room and a chair for the speaker. A screen is helpful but not essential. We can deliver the talk without one.

How many people do we need?

We ask for at least ten people for a talk in person, and we’ve spoken to groups of a hundred and twenty. If your group is smaller than ten, we’d be happy to run it as a virtual session instead, or anyone interested can join one of our free online seminars.

How far ahead should we book?

Four to six weeks is ideal, mainly so there’s time to promote it to your members. We can often do sooner.
